Chapter Six

Midnight passed before the house quieted down and they could finally get started on their clandestine mission. They were back in their own clothes, which had been laundered and ironed and returned to their room by the time they had finished dinner.

“This way,” Rafe whispered, as they reached the end of the hallway and had to choose whether to go upstairs or to the front of the house, where the public rooms—living room, dining room and courtyard—were.

He chose the downstairs rooms. They’d seen those before. That familiarity and the moonlight that filtered in the windows should help them navigate in the dark and avoid bumping into furniture.

He moved forward but stopped again as he heard a small noise from upstairs. He tensed as the sound came again.

“Somebody’s snoring,” Isabelle whispered behind him.

After a moment, he realized she was right and he moved on.

His gaze settled on the poker next to the living room fireplace. Not a bad weapon, but, should they get caught, how would he explain it? The plan was, if they woke anyone, Isabelle would say she was having stomach cramps and Rafe was escorting her to find a servant to ask for some medicine. The poker did not fit into that cover.

He saw moonlight glinting off a letter opener on a desk and picked it up, handed it to Isabelle. The piece of sharp metal wasn’t much, but it was small enough to be concealed, which she did immediately.

He riffled through the papers on top of the desk while she searched the two shallow drawers. Newspaper clippings and stock reports—nothing exciting, nothing he could remotely connect to Juan DeLeon or Sonya Botero.

He moved on, looked over the bookshelf, lifted up a few volumes to see if there might be some documents hidden behind them, but came up empty. He nearly upset the phone table as he turned, knocking off the receiver but catching it a few inches above the tile floor.

He paused at the buzz that indicated an open line, lifted the receiver to his ear. “It works.”

Had Martinez lied or had the lines been repaired since dinner?

The maid had never shown up with the promised cell phone. He dialed Rachel’s number while considering the situation.

“Rachel, it is Rafe. Listen, we’re at Alberto Martinez’s estate under house arrest. What can you find out about the guy?” he whispered, once she picked up on the other end.

“Hang on a sec,” she said.

A couple of minutes passed before she got back on the line, time he spent watching Isabelle search through the room.

“Used to be one of Juan’s allies, now Martinez is one of his biggest enemies. He stands to lose millions if Juan’s bills pass.”

“Thanks, Rachel.”

“He’s been linked to some undesirable elements. Watch out and keep safe. Things are in motion. I might be able to get you out of there by midmorning.”

He thanked her again and hung up, went to help Isabelle as she moved on to the next room. The courtyard took only a minute or two—nothing there but plants.
